As a dancer, you need to look after yourself but also keep moving forward. Here are the 5 Things a Dancer Should Do Everyday
1. Stay Hydrated
I see sooo many people at dance not drinking water and it frustrates me because we need to look after our bodies! We only get one body and if we don't look after it properly things can go wrong :(
2. Stretch
Stretching is really important to me because you're helping yourself move forward and you're also putting in the time outside of class. A lot of people in my class don't stretch at home and a classmate and I are accelerating much quicker because we are putting in the time outside of class. Before I stretch, I do a little improv to get me warm and ready - it's also great fun.
3. Listen to Your Body
Last year, my ankle was hurting in class from an existing injury and I ignored it and kept dancing. I actually injured myself a whole lot further and my body tried to tell me yet I ignored it. I would hate for this to happen to anyone else so please listen to what your body is telling you! Whether it's a previous or new injury, you're body knows what is right and you should always trust it.
4. Listen to Corrections
When I first started dancing, I was getting so sick of corrections, but when I actually started to think about them I became a much better dancer. Even if you classmate is receiving them, check you're not making those same mistakes too. Your teachers are your friends and just want to help you, so if you're constantly being "picked" on don't take it personally, it means they think you have potential and they want you to succeed.
5. Dance Shows are good motivation
Is it just me or after watching a professional dancer do you feel like you need to stretch? Shows like Dance Moms and Dance Academy are great T.V series to get you in the mood and feeling motivated. Whether you can't be bothered to stretch or haven't left the couch all day these shows really motivate me to stretch and get moving.
